Is Garage Door Repair Covered by Homeowners Insurance? What Usually Is and What Is Not
Often yes for storm, tree or car damage, usually no for worn springs and rollers. What Metro Detroit homeowners should check before they file a claim.
Often, yes, when something sudden damages the door: a storm, a falling tree or limb, a car backing into it, or vandalism. Most homeowners policies treat an attached garage as part of the house, so the door is covered on the same terms as the rest of the home. What is usually not covered is wear: a spring that snaps after years of use, worn rollers, a tired opener or rust. Your deductible decides whether a claim is worth filing, and your own policy has the final word, so read it or call your agent before you file.
What Insurance Usually Covers
- Storm and wind damage. Wind that dents panels, pushes the door out of its tracks or drops a tree limb on it is one of the most common covered causes.
- A car hitting the door. Backing into a closed door is usually covered by the homeowners policy for the door itself. Damage to the car is a matter for your auto policy, and if someone else drove into it, their auto insurance may pay for the door.
- Vandalism and break-ins. A door that was pried, bent or forced open is usually covered, and the insurance company will normally want a police report.
- Fire and falling objects. Damage from a fire, or from something falling on the door, is usually covered as well.
What It Usually Does Not Cover
- A spring that breaks from age. Torsion springs are built for a set number of open and close cycles and then wear out. A spring that snaps on a cold morning is normally treated as wear, not sudden damage.
- Worn rollers, cables and hinges. Parts that wear out slowly count as maintenance, which policies generally leave out.
- An opener that quits. A motor or circuit board that fails from age is usually not covered. A power surge during a storm can be a different story, so ask your agent.
- Rust, rot and neglect. Damage that builds up over years, such as a rusted bottom section or a rotted wood door, is generally excluded.

Attached or Detached Makes a Difference
Many older homes in Detroit, Royal Oak, Warren and Southfield have a detached garage at the back of the lot. Most policies cover a detached garage under a separate part of the policy, often called other structures, which has its own limit, usually lower than the limit on the house. An attached garage is normally covered as part of the house itself. Check which part of your policy applies before you file.
Why Metro Detroit Is Asking Now
The severe storms that hit Detroit on the night of September 3, 2026 brought down large trees and damaged homes on both the east and west sides of the city, and many homeowners are still sorting out repairs and claims. Winter adds its own risks: heavy, wet snow, a door frozen to the floor that gets forced, and cars sliding on an icy driveway into a closed door. If your door was damaged, get it looked at before the hard freezes, because a door that will not close properly lets the cold and the snow straight into the garage.
Before You File a Claim
- Make it safe first. Do not run the opener on a bent door or a door that is out of its tracks, and keep your hands away from the springs and cables. If the door is stuck partly open, leave it where it is and call.
- Take photos. Photograph the door inside and out, the tracks, and whatever hit it, before anything is moved or repaired.
- Check your deductible. A small repair can cost less than your deductible, and then paying for it yourself is often the simpler choice. Your agent can tell you how a claim would affect your policy.
- Keep the paperwork. Insurance companies usually want a written description of the damage and an itemized invoice. We email a digital invoice on every job, which you can send straight to your insurance company.
- Report a hit-and-run or a break-in. A police report usually goes with the claim, so file one first.
