Garage Door Cable Came Off? What to Do Now, and What Not to Touch

A garage door cable came off the drum or snapped? What to do right away in Metro Detroit, why cables come off, the broken spring often behind it, and when to call.

If a garage door cable came off the drum or snapped, stop using the door. Leave it where it is, unplug the opener, and keep people and cars out from under it. The cable is what holds the door level against the spring, so a door with one loose cable can twist in its tracks or drop on one side. In most cases something else let go first, often a broken spring, and putting the cable back on without fixing that just throws it off again.

What to Do Right Away

  • Stop pressing the button. An opener will keep pulling on a door that is hanging crooked and can bend the top section or pull the door out of its tracks. Unplug the opener or switch off its outlet.
  • Leave the door where it stopped. If it is down, leave it down. If it is part way up and leaning, do not try to force it closed by hand, and do not pull the red emergency release while it is up: with a cable or spring gone, the door can come down hard.
  • Keep everyone clear. Move the car out only if it is not under the door. Keep children and pets out of the garage until the door is safe.
  • Look, do not touch. From a safe spot, check whether the spring above the door has a gap in it, whether the cable is lying loose beside the track, and whether one side of the door sits lower than the other. That tells a technician most of what they need to know before arriving.
  • Leave the bottom brackets alone. The brackets at the bottom corners hold the end of the cable, and on many doors they are under full spring tension. Loosening one by hand is how people get hurt.

Why a Garage Door Cable Comes Off

  • A broken spring. This is the most common reason. When a torsion spring snaps, the cables lose tension, go slack and slip off their drums. If you heard a loud bang from the garage before the cable came off, start here.
  • One side of the door stopped. A bin, a bike or a ridge of ice under one corner stops that side while the other keeps moving. The cable on the stopped side goes slack and jumps the drum.
  • A frayed or rusted cable. Cables wear at the bottom bracket, where water and road salt sit all winter. A cable with broken strands can let go without warning.
  • A worn drum or a slipped set screw. If the drum on the spring shaft loosens, the cable no longer winds evenly and can come off.
  • Bent track or worn rollers. A door that binds in its tracks can lift unevenly, and the slack side throws its cable.

Because a broken spring is behind so many loose cables, read our guide to a broken garage door spring to see what to look for. If the door will not lift by hand at all, our post on why a garage door won't open manually covers that case.

Why Metro Detroit Is Asking Now

The cold has started. Local forecasts called for patchy frost across Metro Detroit on the night of Friday, October 16, 2026, with lows in the mid 30s, and Detroit usually sees its first freeze in the second half of October. Worn springs tend to give out in the first cold snaps, and a broken spring is the most common reason a cable comes off.

Winter adds two more causes. Snow and ice at the bottom of the door can stop one side while the other keeps going, and road salt tracked in by the car sits on the bottom brackets and rusts the cable ends. Our winter garage door maintenance checklist covers the checks that keep both in hand.
