Happy Rosh Hashanah: Holiday Hours and a New-Year Garage Door Checklist

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins at sundown on Friday, September 11, 2026. Our team is taking the holiday off to be with family, and we want every customer to know exactly when we are closed and when we are back. Below are our holiday hours, a little about the holiday itself, and a short garage door checklist for a fresh start to the new year.

Rosh Hashanah Holiday Hours

• Friday, September 11: open our regular Friday hours, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
• Saturday, September 12: closed. This is the first day of Rosh Hashanah, and it is also Shabbat.
• Sunday, September 13: closed for the second day of Rosh Hashanah. On a normal week we are open Sundays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, so please note the change.
• Monday, September 14: back to our regular hours from 9:00 AM.

Our regular schedule is Sunday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and we are closed every Saturday. It is also listed on our hours page. If you need garage door service, please call us at (313) 236-4558 once we reopen on Monday morning.

What Is Rosh Hashanah?

Rosh Hashanah means "head of the year." It is the Jewish New Year, observed on the first and second days of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, and this year it welcomes the year 5787. It begins at sundown.

Here in Metro Detroit, candles are lit at 7:31 PM on Friday, September 11, and the holiday ends at 8:28 PM on Sunday, September 13 (times from Hebcal for Oak Park, MI). Because the first day, Saturday, September 12, is also Shabbat, the shofar is sounded on the second day, Sunday.

Two traditions you may notice around the holiday table are apples dipped in honey, for a sweet year, and a round challah, for the cycle of the year. The greeting you will hear is "Shana Tova," a good year, or "Shana Tova u'Metukah," a good and sweet year.

Yom Kippur follows soon after and begins at sundown on Sunday, September 20.

A New-Year Garage Door Checklist

A new year is a good moment to take stock of the house, too. These five checks take a few minutes, and none of them needs tools.

• Test the auto-reverse. Lay a roll of paper towels on the floor in the door's path and close the door with the opener. The door should reverse as soon as it touches the roll. If it does not, stop using the opener to close the door until it has been checked.
• Listen for new noises. Run the door up and down once and listen. A grinding, scraping or popping sound you did not hear last year is worth writing down and mentioning when you call.
• Look at the springs and cables, but do not touch them. With the door closed, look at the springs above the door and the cables along each side. A gap in a spring coil or frayed strands on a cable are reasons to stop using the door. Springs and cables are under high tension, so leave any adjustment to a technician.
• Keep the safety eyes clean and aligned. The two small sensors near the floor on either side of the door should face each other. Wipe the lenses with a soft cloth and make sure nothing blocks the path between them.
• Check the bottom weatherseal before winter. Look along the rubber seal at the bottom of the door. If it is cracked, stiff or lets daylight through at the floor, plan to replace it before the cold weather arrives.
