Why Is My Garage Door Opener Beeping? What the Beeps Usually Mean
Garage door opener beeping? Usually a low backup battery, a power outage or a close warning. What each beep means, what to check in Metro Detroit, and when to call.
A garage door opener that beeps is usually telling you about its backup battery. Many openers sold in recent years carry a battery that runs the door during a power outage, and the opener beeps while it is running on that battery and again when the battery is weak or worn out. The other common causes are a warning just before the door closes from an app or a timer, and a beep that is not the opener at all, such as a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm asking for a new battery. The beep pattern, and the light on the opener, usually tell you which one it is.
What the Beep Usually Means
- A beep every few seconds while the power is out. The opener is running on its backup battery, and that is normal. The beeping stops when the power comes back. Until then the door still works, but only for a limited number of trips, so use it only when you need to.
- A beep every 30 seconds or so with the power on. On many models, including LiftMaster and Chamberlain, this means the backup battery is low or no longer holds a charge, often with a flashing orange light on the opener. A battery that has been in the opener for a few years is the usual reason.
- A beep and flashing lights just before the door closes. That is a safety warning, not a fault. When the door is closed from a phone app or by a timer-to-close setting, the opener beeps and flashes first so anyone near the door knows it is about to move.
- Blinking lights and a door that will not close. On some openers the lights flash, and some beep, when the safety sensors at the bottom of the door are blocked or knocked out of line. The door goes back up instead of closing.
- A chirp that is not coming from the opener. Stand under the opener and listen. A smoke or carbon monoxide alarm in the garage or the next room chirps when its own battery is low, and a cold night can set it off. Check those before you open the opener.
What to Check Before You Call
- Check that the opener has power. Look at the outlet in the ceiling and the breaker for the garage. A tripped breaker or a tripped GFCI outlet can put the opener on battery while the rest of the house has power.
- Look at the light on the opener. Openers with a backup battery usually have a small status light near the battery. Your owner's manual, or the label inside the light cover, says what each color and beep pattern means for your model.
- Think about the age of the battery. Backup batteries in openers often last only a few years. If yours came with an opener that is several years old and it beeps with the power on, the battery is the likely cause.
- Use the battery made for your opener. The battery usually sits behind a cover on the opener and plugs in with a connector. Unplug the opener before you open the cover, and use the replacement the manufacturer lists for your model.
- Do not just pull the battery and forget it. Disconnecting the battery stops the beeping, but then the door will not run in an outage, which is exactly when you may need to get the car out.
If the opener beeps and the door will not close, the safety sensors are the next place to look. Our garage door safety sensor fix guide walks through it. If the power is out and the battery is dead, our post on why a garage door won't open manually covers using the emergency release safely.
Why Metro Detroit Is Asking Now
The cold has started. Temperatures were in the 30s across Southeast Michigan on the morning of Saturday, October 17, 2026, with more frost possible early Sunday. Batteries hold less charge in the cold, and an unheated garage is often the coldest room in the house, so a backup battery that was already getting weak tends to start beeping in the first cold weeks of fall.
Fall and winter storms also bring power outages, and that is when the backup battery does its job, so it is worth fixing a beeping battery before the first storm rather than after. If your opener has no battery backup and you are thinking about one, our garage door opener buying guide covers what to look for.
